background: Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This gene encodes an epithelial keratin that is expressed in skeletal muscle, skin and scalp. The type II keratins are clustered in a region of chromosome 12q13.[provided by RefSeq, Jun 2009] Function: Keratins, such as KRT6L, are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. KRT6L is expressed in skeletal muscle, skin and scalp, but not in any other tissues or organs examined. Subunit: Heterotetramer of two type I and two type II keratins. Tissue Specificity: Expressed in skeletal muscle, skin and scalp, but not in any other tissues or organs examined. Similarity: Belongs to the intermediate filament family.
